Computers in Prison
April 21,2002
My paper is about computers being used by inmates, in prison. I will have information from research found on different sites on the internet, interviews from staff members that work with inmates, inmates, and some of my own experiences. My goal is to see if computers would be useful to get in the Supermax. There are many things to consider when making this decision for computer usage by inmates. I will cover some of these in my paper; one of them is security. Through research I hope to see if education is helped or easier with the use of computers. So let's get going.
First, let's discuss the people that are in education, in prison and for what reason. The biggest portion of them need adult basic education(40%), the next biggest is General Equivalency Diploma(29%), generalized programming(17%), english as second language(6%), computer/typing(4%), corresponding courses(2%), and indian college(2%). The two biggest ones being basic education and high school diploma most often are done in classroom or individually with teacher or tutor. At the Supermax, we don't use computers, since they are a security issue. The inmates could use the computers as a weapon. The Supermax is a maximum security prison, so security must be tight. We teach both of the biggest population areas but with no computers. Education in prison must be a safe place for inmates; they need to feel secure while they are in class. They, also, must be comfortable with the teacher. There must be a mutual form of trust which is hard for most of the inmates. According to one teacher, Safety is absolutely essential and it could take up to a month before they will accept the fact that they are not going to be ridiculed particularly by me but also by their peers. During this time it is better to be person to person. These guys have problems trusting, and it is hard to gain trust on a computer. Many of the inmates can't read or write so computers scare them off.
